80's @ 8 With Bamber 5/18

Amber Spencer

Welcome to my Totally Awesome blog, where you'll find all things 80's! This is the place to find each show's playlist along with *Trivia Tidbits* (*TT) on some of the songs played. It's also where I will let you know if Flock of Seagulls decides to go back on tour, if leg warmers make a come back or if Billy Idol gets arrested...again!

MAY 18th Playlist

  • Bizarre Love Triangle - New Order

*From their album "Brotherhood. New Order had a very distinctive "New Wave" sound, the same you'll hear in their other hit, "Blue Monday".

  • I Ran (So Far Away) - Flock of Seagulls

*As famous for their new wave sound as for Mike Score's hair. Video Game fans will remember this song as the theme to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

  • Tainted Love - Soft Cell

*A cover that had more success than the original 1964, Gloria Jones version. Covered by Marilyn Manson and featured in the movie Coneheads.

  • Bad Reputation - Joan Jett

*Girl Power! After the Runaways (her earlier band) broke up no one would sign Joan Jett as a solo artist because she was too wild...this song was her response to her critics. When she was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, she opened the ceremony with this song.

  • Precious - The Pretenders

*Released on the Pretenders debut album in 1980, a little grittier, punk-ier, sound from Chrissie Hynde than the bands later music.

  • Never Say Never - Romeo Void

* "...I might like you  better if we slept together..." Also featured in GTA: Vice City, and the movies Reckless and the Wolf of Wallstreet.

  • Rock Lobster - The B-52's

*Actually released in '79 the song was still popular on the charts in 1980, and features the bands distinctively weird sound.

  • Take On Me - A-ha

*Who can forget this awesome video of the girl being pulled into the comic book! An 80's classic.

  • True - Spandau Ballet

*Pronounced like this: Spahn-dow Ballet. Just say it in your best German accent and you're on the right track. Morbidly, the term came from Allied troops in WWI to refer to twitching corpses on barbed wire being hit by german machine gun fire. This song was a #1 hit in 21 countries! It was used in PM Dawn's song "set a drift on memory bliss" and featured in The Wedding Singer, Wedding Crashers, Sixteen Candles, The Simpsons, The Office and Spin City!

  • Don't You Want Me - The Human League

*So new wave that they considered this song "too mainstream". Phillip Oakley was the driving force behind this band.

  • Obsession - Animotion

*A song about a stalking...go figure!

  • Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode

*This song was written after Martin Gore read Priscilla Presley's book about her relationship with Elvis. It's been re-done by Johnny Cash and Marilyn Manson

  • Anything, Anything - Dramarama

*Featured in Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and covered later by Buck Cherry.
